The Autumn Home: Making it seasonably cosy
With our move to the country just a few weeks away, I have not done a huge amount of autumn decorating beyond the front door.
It reminded me of the autumn of 2018 when we moved around the same time from Devon to Cheshire. I was only able to add my seasonably cosy touches in November. It will be the same again this year.
Reminiscent of re-living a house move in late autumn, I thought I would share my autumn home from that time. It’s interesting because I think my tastes on adding seasonal touches have changed since then.
I seem to be going through a phase of rejecting all the ‘fakery’ and tending towards embracing the natural and homspun as I did in 2014. That year I brought in a lot of foliage and natural decor gathered on our autumn nature walks and I suspect, that once we are settled into our new home in the country I will be doing the same again this year.
Let’s dig into the archives to that autumn home post from 2018…
Originally posted November 2018
Today, though, I want to focus on all things autumnal and how I’ve brought the beauty of this season into my home. 🍂 There’s something so magical about autumn in the English countryside—the crisp air, the vibrant colours, the slower pace as we prepare for the cosier months ahead. It’s my favourite time of year to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
This year was a bit of a scramble. We have been living in one of my husband’s hotels while searching for our new home after moving up from Devon. Its November and because it is so late in the season, everything is feeling a little out of sync, as if autumn has slipped away before I can truly embrace it. But I can’t let this season go by without doing something, even if it is November already!
The Autumn Home: A Warm Welcome at the Front Door
The front of the house is always my first focus, and this year, two pots of deep-hued chrysanthemums and a couple of pumpkins greet everyone who drops by. I couldn’t resist these vibrant shades of orange and burgundy—they’re my favourite combination yet!
Fingers crossed I can find the same ones next year.
My daughter even added her own creative touch, drawing a lovely chalk art welcome board for me. We did have a chuckle over the slightly short ‘F’ in “Fall,” but overall, it turned out wonderfully festive.
Seasonal Touches Inside the Home
Stepping inside, the hallway is one of my favourite spots to decorate. The dresser is dressed for the season with a collection of my favourite nature books and some freshly gathered foliage.
There’s no mistaking it now—autumn has fully arrived indoors! And tucked away in my seasonal decorations box, I rediscovered an old favourite: the little acorn garland I knitted about five years ago. Isn’t it wonderful how decorating for autumn can feel like greeting old friends? I think I’ll knit a few more acorns to sit in a display bowl—they’re just too charming to resist.
Cosy Corners and Candles
One thing that truly makes a home feel autumnal is candlelight. As the evenings grow darker and the days shorter, there’s nothing more comforting than lighting candles and letting their soft glow fill the room.
One of my favourite little pieces is a candle stand that holds three candles. I’ve just finished filling it up, and now it sits proudly on display, next to my copy of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady. Each week, I change the page to showcase another of the beautiful illustrations that capture the changing seasons so perfectly.
There’s also a special cottage print hanging in my hallway, gifted to me by a dear friend. It has scripture subtly woven through the sky above the little house—such a beautiful and peaceful addition to my home. It’s these small, personal touches that make all the difference, don’t they?
My little candle haul is another delight of the season. Even though one of the candles was intended as a gift for my friend, it looked so perfect sitting with the others on display that I kept it there until she popped by. I do love how candles, tapestries, and cushions can come together to create a sense of warmth and togetherness. Speaking of which, that tapestry in the centre was the first piece of handwork I completed after we moved to the UK. I started it during the three months we waited for our furniture to arrive, and it kept me occupied as I adjusted to life here. It was my first attempt at tapestry, and even though I haven’t done one since, I wonder why—I really did enjoy it! Perhaps I’m just a bit too distracted by my many other craft projects
The Mantelpiece and Stitching Projects
Moving on to the mantelpiece, I’ve displayed a little bowl of stitched cushions that I’ve made over the years.
These sweet little pieces are some of my favourites, and they all come from free patterns I’ve collected over time. You can find them on my Embroidery and Cross Stitch Pinterest board, if you’d like to try some yourself.
Draped along the mantel is a string of autumn bunting. To me, bunting is simply mandatory in an English home, especially in autumn! I have various strings of bunting throughout the house, adding a whimsical touch to every room. It brings such a cheerful, festive air, don’t you think?
A Cosy Coffee Table Display
And then, of course, there’s the coffee table display—another place for candles (because you can never have too many!), along with some tea lights and fairy lights. There’s always a seasonally scented candle burning, and this week it’s salted caramel. The sweet, comforting scent fills the room and makes it feel even cosier as we settle in for the evening. The table is decorated with little trinkets, stitching projects, and fairy lights that brighten the shortening days, making even the greyest autumn afternoon feel warm and inviting.
The Joy of Autumnal Decorating
I’ve loved bringing the essence of autumn into my home this year, from the bright chrysanthemums on the doorstep to the flickering candles indoors, each element adds to the cosy and inviting atmosphere that I so cherish in this season.
How about you, lovelies? What touches have you added to your own homes this autumn? I would love to see your decor, so please share your IG handles or leave a comment to let me know how you’ve brought autumn into your space. I’m always on the lookout for new inspiration and ideas to try. Until next time, here’s to crisp autumn days, warm fires, and homes filled with love and candlelight. 🍁✨
Blessings in Christ,
