Some Favorite Green and Self-Sufficiency Books
I thought that I would share some great inspirational ‘Green Living’ books with you today. One of my all-time favorites has to be ‘Living the Good Life‘ by Linda Cockburn
I’ve had this book on my shelf for years and often refer back to it. Not only is it an excellent and entertaining read, but it is full of useful recipes for all sorts of things, from cleaning detergents to your own beer (if you like that sort of thing) etc… The author is Australian but makes many comparisons to the UK, making it relevant to those living in Britain.
Aah – such an inspirational book.
This book has fueld MANY a wannabe self-sufficiency farmers dreams! We are not exempt from that group. John Seymour’s ‘The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency‘ is packed with great advice and practical ‘how to’s’. A must have on every book shelf.
Now this book is a recent find for me. Inspired by John Seymour’s Self- Sufficiency book, this family turned the dream into reality. However – the difference in this book is first it is written to a modern reader. Living in the 2000’s is so much different to the 1970’s. Most people cannot just up and leave and be self-sufficient instantly. This book acknowledges the challenges we all face now and offers many practical and doable solutions. It also address real issues that we are facing such as the cost of energy, water, food etc.
Now for those of us living in Britain, it can frustrating to read those ‘how to cut down your living expenses’ books that are written for the US market. Well, I have recently come across John Harrison’s ‘Low Cost Living’. This book looks at living better and spending less right here in the British Isles! I have only read a few chapters so far but am finding it’s suggestions practical and attainable.
A recent gift from my godmother was this wonderful book, ‘The Hedgerow Handbook‘ by Adele Nozedar. Again it is written for those living in Britain. It is packed with recipes and remedies utilizing Britain’s hedgerows – which is all free for you to gather on your country rambles. It has some interesting folklore rituals thrown in to boot, making it a not only useful read, but an entertaining one as well.
