Seasonal Plans for March

I know that it’s not the 1st of March quite yet, but I thought I would post my seasonal plans for the month ahead of time for a change :o)

March is an in-between month, it straddles the seasons. Winter in the first half and spring bouncing in just over half-way through the month. Already there are signs that the world is once again on the brink of suddenly springing to life once more – which is probably where the name ‘Spring’ comes from! The Latin name for this season was ver which come from the word vernal, hence – Vernal Equinox – the astrological start of the new season.

Although this can be a turbulent month weather-wise, I have to say that I LOVE March. So many wonderful feast days fall in this month and what with all the changes taking place in nature – what’s not to love? 

Liturgically this month marks the start of the Eastertide season. Springtime and Eastertide – inextricably linked here in the Northern Hemisphere. This is such a joyous time is it not? I find that there is such hope around this time of the year. 

With so much happening this month – there is ample opportunity to plan some wonderful things to bless your home and family. Here are some of my plans for March 2014 :o)

16th – My Lovely sister’s Birthday

30th – Mothering Sunday

30th – British Summer Time Begins

Nature

Daffodils in bloom

Crocus popping up

frosts and snow still possible! (Our heaviest snow of 2013 was in March!)

Forsythia 

Camellia in bloom

Toads and frogs spawning

Nesting sites being sought out

Lambing season (Lambing Live showing this year – check out ‘Homeschooling)

Vernal Equinox – 20th

Mad March Hares boxing

Hazel Catkins everywhere (aka lambs tails)

Pussy willows

Garden 

Gardeners World Back in March :o)

Clear pathways of winter moss

Dig over and compost veggie beds

sow first salad crops, cabbages, broad beans, early carrots and turnips

Plant early potatoes

Sow more tender veg seeds indoors

Prune Rose bushes (when forsythia comes out in flower it’s time to prune the roses!)

Snail watch! Keep an eye out for these pesky creatures!

Spring, Almost

The sunshine gleams so bright and warm,

The sky is blue and clear.

I run outdoors without a coat,

And spring is almost here.

Then before I know it,

Small clouds have blown together,

Till the sun just can’t get through them,

And again, it’s mitten weather.
